Greek Orthodox Church in Libya looted

It has been reported today, 26 August, that St George’s Church in Tripoli has been looted by unknown attackers. The church dates back to 1647 and is the oldest Orthodox church in North Africa. A shrine to St George, which came from Mt Athos, was stolen, as well as old Gospel books, chalices and other Church furnishings.

The looting was announced by Metropolitan Theophylact of Tripoli who said that the church had been emptied. He added that he was much grieved by what was happening to what was once a beautiful and hospitable country, which was now destroyed.

The thieves had earlier contacted the rector of the church and asked for a ransom for the items. Once informed, the bishop had contacted the police, but in the present situation there is little that can be expected of them.
